Is chip tuning and ECU remapping the same thing?

Chip tuning is the term used to describe the modification of an EPROM chip in a vehicles ECU (Electronic Control Unit). An EPROM chip (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) is a form of chip which is used in vehicles today which essentially retains its data, even when the vehicle is switched off and no power is supplied to the chip.

The whole idea behind chip tuning (the modern form of which is called 'ECU remapping') is to optimise the performance of a vehicle, whether that be for more power or increased fuel economy.

Chiptuning EPROM

Chip tuning is a method of engine tuning which was primarily carried out within the 80's and 90's, when vehicles did not have standard OBD ports (On-Board Diagnostics). Due to this, the EPROM chip had to be physically opened up in order to make modifications to the vehicles performance.

The chip-tuning term can be rather misleading as it is still the term which is commonly referred to today for reprogramming the ECU. People will often use the term chip tuning to describe ECU remapping, which is the process which has superseded that of chip tuning.

Today, modern cars (from around the year 2000) all have an OBD port. This plug allows communication to be made directly with the ECU remotely, where parameters within the ECU can be changed. As this is all done remotely, there is no risk of damaging the ECU through physically mishandling it.

A badly tuned ECU can cause a decrease in the vehicles overall performance and fuel economy and in certain cases engine damage. For this reason ECU-RS only provide customised files, which are uniquely remapped in accordance with your vehicles' safety tolerance zones.  What's more, each remap that ECU-RS provide is processed by our in-house team of remapping experts.
